Lando Norris won a chaotic British Grand Prix to the delight of the home fans and closed the gap to Formula 1 championship rival Oscar Piastri.
Rain wrecked havoc at Silverstone before the race even started with several drivers, including George Russell, pitting on the formation lap, a gamble that didn’t pay off.
Polesitter Max Verstappen lead the way initially before Piastri took the lead but the Aussie was penalised for brake-testing under the safety car.
After Verstappen spun, it was Norris’ race to lose and he drove superbly to stick with his teammate and rival before passing him in the pits and claiming a memorable victory.
Sir Lewis Hamilton came close to a first podium for Ferrari but lost out to Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg, who miraculously finished third after starting 19th to secure his first F1 podium at the 239th attempt.

Norris: ‘The main thing is just don’t f*** it up’
Here’s Norris’ slightly sweary reaction to winning his home race:
‘It’s beautiful. Everything I dreamed of, I guess. Everything I’ve ever wanted to achieve. Apart from a championship, I think this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings and in terms of achievement, being proud, all of it.
‘This is where it all started for me, and now thankfully I’ve been able to have my go. Incredible race, stressful as always, but the support from the fans made the difference today, so I’ve got to thank them for it all.
‘Your mind just goes pretty blank. Everything you might think before the race, you forget. The main thing is just don’t f*** it up, that’s rule number one.
‘The last few laps I was just looking into the crowd. I was just trying to take it all in, enjoy the moment, because it might never happen again. I hope it does. But these are memories that I’ll bring with me forever. An incredible achievement.’

Piastri fumes after penalty
There’s delight for Norris and Hulkenberg but Piastri is furious. He clearly feels he didn’t deserve the penalty that has cost him victory today.
‘I’m not going to say much. I’ll get myself in trouble,’ he tells Jenson Button.
‘Well done to Nico. I think that’s the highlight of the day.
‘Apparently you can’t brake behind the Safety Car any more. I did it for five laps before that.
‘I’m not going to say much because I’ll get myself in trouble. I still like Silverstone, even if I don’t like it today…’
Norris in tears
Norris cries over the team radio. This is what winning at Silverstone means.
‘Woooooooo! Wooooooooo! We did it, at home. Oh my god, we did it. It’s beautiful!’
Hulkenberg cannot believe what’s happened. He started 19th and has just got his first F1 podium in his 239th race! The curse is over!
