Alexander Zverev found himself enamoured with a radio broadcaster’s Yorkshire accent after his second-round French Open match and joked he would play at any tournament that takes place in the region.
The German had just come off court after winning a five-set match that lasted the best part of three-and-a-half hours against Dusan Lajovic but he was in a relaxed mood and enjoyed a humorous back and forth in his press conference.
When asked a question by radio journalist Jonathan Pinfield, the second seed replied with a smile: ‘Where you from, buddy?
After being told he was from Yorkshire, he added: ‘ Nice. If I ever make a tournament there I’m coming just because of that accent. Love it.
‘I didn’t understand a word you’re saying, but it’s not important.’

When the journalist reiterated his question of whether Roland Garros could be a turning point for him at the majors, Zverev happily agreed, saying: ‘Sure. Why not?
‘Just because you said it so nicely, I’m going to believe that now.’
Their exchange continued later on during the press conference, in what clearly blossommed into a bit of a bromance, and Zverev made a promise to him should he reach the French Open final.
Journalist: You clearly enjoy your tennis. You say…
Zverev: Not as much as your accent, buddy. I love that.
Journalist: I will come to all your press conferences now.
Zverev: I love that.
Journalist: If you get to the final we’ll make sure I can ask a question, then. Because I get edged out.
Zverev: I’ll definitely make sure if I get to the final you’re asking multiple questions.
Beautiful stuff!
