The Queen will receive Boris Johnson on Tuesday next week followed by an audience with the new PM, a spokesperson said.
It will either be Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss, who are nearing the end of their battle to become the next Conservative Party leader.
Foreign Secretary Ms Truss looks on track to win and appears to have far more support among the Tory party’s 175,000 strong membership.
Voting in the contest will close on Friday before the result is announced on Monday.
The Queen, 96, will not travel to London and will instead receive Mr Johnson at her Scottish estate of Balmoral.
It will be the first time in the monarch’s 70-year reign that a prime minister has officially tendered their resignation or been appointed outside of Buckingham Palace.
Royal aides wanted to avoid making any last-minute changes due to the Queen’s ongoing mobility issues.

Mr Johnson was forced to resign as Tory leader in early July after a series of scandals from his government made too many ministers lose faith in his leadership.
The final straw was his admission that he knew of sexual assault allegations against MP Chris Pincher when he promoted him to deputy chief whip in February.
No 10 changed its story a few times, initially denying he was aware of the claims, but later saying he ‘couldn’t recall’ the allegations.

At first Mr Johnson remained defiant, but after a mass exodus of ministers and his new Chancellor turning on him less than 48 hours in the job, he finally caved in.
It opened up one of the most bitter Tory leadership races in decades, with plenty of mud slinging and airing of dirty laundry.
Whoever does take the job will have their work cut out for them, as the public call for greater support to cope with a cost-of-living crisis and spiraling energy bills.
