People, remain calm, but after years of rumours it has been confirmed that Disney officially has a third Princess Diaries film in the works.
A whopping 21 years after the first film shot Anne Hathaway to stardom – and 18 years after the sequel with a young Chris Pine, it looks like audiences will get to revisit our favourite Princess of Genova.
Supergirl and Reacher writer Aadrita Mukerji is penning the screenplay, according to The Hollywood Reporter, while producer Debra Martin Chase returns for a third time.
Sources also excitingly report that it will be a continuation of the two previous stories with Anne Hathaway, rather than a reboot.
The films were based off author Meg Cabot’s popular books, the latest of which she published in 2015, called Royal Wedding, with another in the works – The Quarantine Princess Diaries.
Although Hathaway is not under contract for a threequel, and is yet to sign a deal, the star has repeatedly voiced her support for another film in the franchise and said she’d be keen to return.

Back in 2019 during an appearance on Lorraine, the Oscar winner told host Christine Lampard that she would be ‘very happy’ to become Mia Thermopolis once more.
‘Oh God, if there was a way for it all to work out, I would be very happy.
‘I love that franchise so much, we just have to wait and see what Disney want to do.’
As recently as October this year, she also doubled down on her eagerness over the idea, as well as trying to attract her legendary co-star Dame Julie Andrews back for a third rodeo.

‘I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,’ Hathaway told ET.
‘If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.’
Dame Julie revealed earlier this year that she feared she might be ‘a little too old a granny for it’, but added to ET: ‘It depends what the story is, and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful. But if not, there will be other things.’

She played Mia’s regal grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, who guides her as she steps from gawky American teenager into her role as a European royal.

Late director Garry Marshall, known for his work on Pretty Woman, helmed both of the previous movies, so a hunt will likely be on soon to find someone who can carry on his work in fine fashion.
