It’s been just over a week since the TV adaptation of popular video game The Last of Us was released and it’s already been renewed for a second season.
The new post-apocalyptic series, which is based on the widely-celebrated video game franchise of the same name, follows a man named Joel (Pedro Pascal) who’s tasked with smuggling a young girl called Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the US.
Taking place 20 years after modern civilisation has been destroyed by a pandemic that ravaged humankind, infecting scores of people with a mutated fungus, Ellie is immune to the virus and therefore could be the key to a cure.
What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the US and depend on each other for survival.
Created by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann, the first two episodes have already been a hit, with the trailers on social media also amassing more than 100 million views.
‘I’m humbled, honoured, and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie’s journey,’ Neil said in a statement announcing the second season.

He added that the collaboration between Craig, the ‘incredible’ cast and crew and HBO had ‘exceeded my already high expectations’.
‘Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two.’
He added he was grateful to the people who had ‘joined us on this journey’.
Fans of the video games and series are understandably excited about the news.
