Simon Cowell endured a moment of quite literally being choked up during Sunday night’s Britain’s Got Talent final as he struggled to speak.
The show creator and talent judge was up to give feedback first after Amy Lou Smith gave an emotional rendition of Christina Aguilera’s ballad Reflection from the Disney movie Mulan.
Sunbed receptionist Amy Lou, 34 – who was pregnant during her first audition – impressed the audience and judges alike once more with her big voice.
However, when Ant and Dec threw to Simon, 63, he was unable to say anything, pointing to his throat as he took a sip of water.
Fellow judge Amanda Holden (rocking up a light-up dress, naturally) then leapt in to rub his back and confirm he wasn’t able to say anything at the moment – perhaps he swallowed his ever-present chewing gum?

After Bruno Tonioli gave a characteristically enthusiastic response to her as a ‘golden belter’, Alesha Dixon said: ‘I think we should put some perspective on this, here you are, shining composed… I am just so proud of you.’
Sorry, this video is no longer available.
Amanda then added: ‘You are a shining example for all the women, we haven’t had a female winner for a long time.’
Going back to Simon for comment, the dad-of-one suggested that the audience hear from Amy Lou about what it meant to her to be performing tonight as he ‘was having trouble speaking’.
She then told Simon how she ‘really’ wanted to win the show for her children, having given birth a few weeks ago.
