The Too Good To Go boxes from Aldi offers shoppers a chance to snap up surplus groceries at bargain prices.
It’s fair to say they’re a bit of a gamble, as they can contain literally anything – from fruit and veg, to meat products.
But one man was more than a little surprised when his £3.30 box contained one ready meal – and a whopping 36 blocks of cheddar cheese.
Blair Cole from Kirkcaldy, Scotland, showed off his box which was filled with cranberry and orange liqueur wensleydale, extra mature cheddar and balsamic onion flavoured cheese.
And the good news is that 27-year-old Blair is a big cheese fan.
‘I love cheese, so it has really been a jackpot for me, he said.
‘My problem now is eating too much as I’m on a diet.
‘Maybe a block per week, so eight months or so of cheese.’
Blair’s girlfriend on the other hand, isn’t quite so cheese obsessed. ‘I do my best to get her to try it out, but her face scrunches up every single time she tries beer or cheese,’ added Blair.
He’s also happy to share: ‘I’ve left some in the fridge also in case any family or friends want any, and if not it will go to the food bank.
What is Too Good to Go?
Too Good To Go is an app that connects customers to restaurants and stores that have surplus unsold food.
The service covers major European cities, and in October 2020 started operations in North America.
The website explains: ‘Food waste is a big problem, and we can be a solution. Too Good To Go is the app that lets you rescue unsold food from an untimely fate at your favourite spots.’
All you have to do is download the app for free and input a location. It will scour the local restaurants and shops offering bundles for a discount price.
Not all providers offer deals at the end of the day, and you can buy items throughout the day including breakfast, lunch or dinner time.
Like much of the food on the Too Good to Go app, Blair’s cheese has a short shelf life, expiring in a matter of days.
But Blair has no issues with it, adding: ‘Cheese just gets better with age.’
While the box was perhaps not quite what he was expecting, it was certainly not a bad deal, considering the total for the lot would normally cost a hefty £89.64.
He continued: ‘I think what Too Good To Go does is really good for stopping food waste, as it helps to break down the stigma of best-before dates.

‘It’s now got me checking the Too Good To Go app for more orders, I feel like I’m very much in the green.’

Blair shared his lucky (or unlucky if you’re lactose intolerant) find on X, formerly Twitter, which has now been viewed by users more than two million times.
In the comments he added that he was ‘buzzing’ with the box of cheesy goodness.
