The body of a man has been found on the beach near Hove’s secluded ‘Millionaire’s Row’.
The man, 53, was found by a passerby off the shore of Western Esplanade, a private cul-de-sac that backs onto Shoreham Harbour, just before 4pm.
He was from Portslade, a west Brighton and Hove suburb that the street is part of.
Officers have been turning people away from the beach, with dozens of police, coastguard crews and paramedics at the scene.
A bystander told The Argus: ‘It was just unbelievable to hear that a body washed up.
‘I heard about it before going into the gym. It’s really sad.’

The police told Metro.co.uk: ‘Police were called after a body of a man was found by members of the public off the shore of Western Esplanade, Hove shortly before 4pm on Tuesday (3 September).
‘Sadly, a 53-year-old man from Portslade was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
‘There are no suspicious circumstances.’
