Manchester United suffered their first defeat of 2025 as they were deservedly beaten 3-1 by Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.
At an emotional Old Trafford following the death of club legend Denis Law, Ruben Amorim’s side were hoping to continue their good form after impressive performances at Liverpool and Arsenal.
It was not to be though as Brighton got off to the perfect start when Yankuba Minteh scored within five minutes thanks to a simple ball over the top.
United rallied and got back on level terms after Joshua Zirkzee was fouled in the box and Bruno Fernandes tucked away the resulting penalty.
But after the break the visitors’ dominated and were back in front courtesy of Kaoru Mitoma, who had teed up Minteh for the opener.

Goodbye!

And that brings to an end our live coverage of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Brighton.
Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils are next in action on Thursday as they host Rangers in a Europa League ‘Battle of Britain’. After that, they travel to Fulham next Sunday.
Until then, enjoy the rest of your evening. Goodbye!
Pick of the stats

Brighton had six shots, three on target and scored them all.
United had 10 shots, one on target and scored it.
Not a good day for either goalkeeper but Onana will get a lot of flak for the Seagulls’ third goal.
Premier League table

Both Southampton and Tottenham fought back in their games but Nottingham Forest and Everton hold on to win 3-2.
The results mean United are 13th in the table – 10 points above the relegation zone.
Brighton move up to ninth – just four points off the Champions League places.
Full-time! Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
The three points are going back to the south coast and deservedly so.
Some wondered if United were back after recent results. The answer today is a resounding no.
90+8 mins: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
Bit of a scrap after Yoro fouls March. Unnecessary.
Referee books them both.
90+7 mins: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
Saying that, the visitors get into the box and a last ditch tackle from Maguire is need to prevent a fourth goal.
90+6 mins: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
Brighton make some late changes. They’re happy to see this out.
90+2 mins: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
A rare, brilliant moment from Antony as he keeps the ball in play. It falls to Garnacho again and his effort deflects wide for a corner.
The set-piece comes to nothing.
90 mins: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
Another attack is well worked to Garnacho but the sub blasts his effort over from close range.
EIGHT minutes adding on, not sure why though.
89 mins: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
As a Crystal Palace fan I must also begrudgingly admit Brighton have played very well. They’ve made United look poor and have been clinical in front of goal.
Home fans aren’t impressed though. Old Trafford is emptying and fast.
86 mins: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
Amad wants to be the hero again as he drives into the box but he opts to neither shoot or pass and the chance goes a begging.
United have been short of ideas or inspiration today.
83 mins: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
Easily United’s worst performance of the year this.
Amorim makes changes. Mazraoui and Zirkzee are off for Hojlund and Antony.
80 mins: Man Utd 1-3 Brighton
Into the last 10 minutes.
Time for another Amad hat-trick?
GOAL! Man Utd 1-3 Brighton (Rutter)
Disaster for Onana!
Ayari puts in a hopeful, low cross. There’s no one there so Onana should just claim it easily.
But the keeper fumbles and pushes the ball into the path of Rutter and the sub makes no mistake. Game over?
75 mins: Man Utd 1-2 Brighton
Better from United as Amad finds Zirkzee but his shot is well-blocked.
Time running out for the Red Devils
73 mins: Man Utd 1-2 Brighton
Pathetic stuff from Van Hecke who goes down as if he’s been shot after Onana gently bumps into him.
The ref warns all players to keep things clean.
71 mins: Man Utd 1-2 Brighton
The first-half was pretty even but since the break it’s been all Brighton.
If they hold on it’ll be three wins in a row at Old Trafford.
69 mins: Man Utd 1-2 Brighton
Danny Welbeck and Yankuba Minteh are subbed off – a welcome sight for United.
Solly March and Georginio Rutter are on.
68 mins: Man Utd 1-2 Brighton
Brighton are so dangerous on the break. Back-to-back corners come to nothing for United and the away side speed away courtesy of Mitoma.
The Seagulls star gives away a foul in the end.
66 mins: Man Utd 1-2 Brighton
Ugarte goes into the book for fouling Ayari.
It’s his last action of the game. He and Mainoo are off for Garnacho and Collyer.
