‘I think it was a soft touch from what I saw. I think it was a soft penalty, it was clear. We need to win three points and we need to win the whole game.

Explaining the decision, the Premier League said: ‘VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review.

‘The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.’

Everybody except Onana is inside the Everton area for a last-ditch corner but United can’t fashion a chance and the full-time whistle goes.

89 mins: SAVE! And that so nearly was the winner! A wonderful effort from Fernandes on the edge of the box but Pickford does superbly to tip the ball over the bar for a corner.

The ball drops invitingly at the feet of Ugarte and the midfielder takes a lovely touch before volleying his effort through a crowded penalty area and past Pickford in the Everton goal.

The visitors improved markedly since that Fernandes free-kick and now they have their second.

Pickford is wrong-footed from the set piece and Fernandes fires the effort into the bottom-right corner.

59 mins: Onana is charged down and, under pressure, kicks it straight out for a throw-in. Moyes’ side have not stopped harrying their opposition for one minute this match.

57 mins: A couple of great crosses from Mykolenko and Young give United something to deal with the trio of centre-backs are able to deal with the threat and clear their lines.

53 mins: And now Everton can make that change as Lindstrom makes way for the former United player.
