An unbelievable day for Newcastle who will celebrate long into the night after ending their long major trophy drought.

The Newcastle boss the first Englishman to win a major domestic trophy in this country since Harry Redknapp won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008.

A huge off-day for Arne Slot’s side, no doubt, but they will now turn their full attention to the Premier League where they are firm favourites.

The players make their way up into the stands to collect their medals and lift the trophy and what a moment for them and the fans.

They’ll be partying well into the night, you suspect.

The Magpies hold on in extra-time and they finally end their major trophy drought after 70 long years.

And it was a result they thoroughly deserved. Goals from Burn and Isak either side of the break made the difference and despite Chiesa pulling one back, Howe’s side see it out to get the celebrations underway!

Game on? Chiesa gets a huge goal off the bench and Liverpool have a lifeline. It’s initially ruled out but it’s overturned after a VAR check.

Four minutes for Liverpool to find another and send us to extra time.

90+3 mins: Into the third of eight minutes of added time and Howe is still furiously gesticulating on the sidelines. Five minutes away from a momentous occasion in his career and Newcastle’s history.

90 mins: A yellow card is shown to Pope for timewasting as Newcastle make a defensive change, with Krafth replacing Murphy.

87 mins: Cheers ring out from the Newcastle end as a hopeless long ball into the area is claimed by Pope.

Liverpool have offered close to nothing all game in an attacking sense.

84 mins: Straight off the bench and into the action but Wilson can only fire over the bar as he swivels on an effort just inside the area.

82 mins: Joelinton finds a pocket of space on the edge of the box but the Newcastle midfielder can only scuff his effort wide of the mark.

80 mins: Newcastle turn to their bench now as Isak and Barnes come off for Wilson and Willock.

78 mins: Another free-kick is swung into the Newcastle area, but Burn rises with authority to head the ball clear. He’s been heroic in both boxes today for Newcastle.
