Newcastle United ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy with a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Liverpool were looking to defend their crown after beating Chelsea in last year’s final but were second best throughout the encounter.
Dan Burn headed Eddie Howe’s side ahead from a corner on the brink of half-time before Alexander Isak doubled the lead with a superb finish in the second half.
Federico Chiesa gave Arne Slot’s side late hope with a goal in injury time, but the Magpies held on to claim their first piece of domestic silverware since 1955 FA Cup

An unbelievable day for Newcastle who will celebrate long into the night after ending their long major trophy drought.
But we’ll call it a night here. Stay tuned across Metro’s site for all the reaction and analysis from this game and all the action across the weekend.
Goodbye for now!
Newcastle have lift off

What a moment for Eddie Howe

The Newcastle boss the first Englishman to win a major domestic trophy in this country since Harry Redknapp won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008.
Not to be for Liverpool
A huge off-day for Arne Slot’s side, no doubt, but they will now turn their full attention to the Premier League where they are firm favourites.

The trophy is lifted!
The players make their way up into the stands to collect their medals and lift the trophy and what a moment for them and the fans.
They’ll be partying well into the night, you suspect.

Bruno Guimaraes speaking to Sky Sports
‘It’s all for these fans. They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history.
‘We can now say we are the champions again. This is one of the best days of my life.
‘I don’t have any words. It’s the best day of my life. For them [the fans] it’s like the World Cup. People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club and it’s one of the best days. This is unbelievable.
‘This is my second home. We are making history. Some day when I leave this club I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to Shearer. He text me before the game. I’m so emotional today.’
