A stretch of the M40 is closed in both directions after two men were killed in a crash near Oxford.
The motorway shut after a serious crash yesterday between junctions J9 (Bicester) and J8A (Thame/Aylesbury) in Oxfordshire.
It has remained closed since about 10.40pm last night following the collision, which killed two men while an investigation is being carried out.
Two other men were seriously injured and they were rushed to hospital, where they remain, Thames Valley Police said.
The road will remain closed ‘for several hours,’ the force warned at lunchtime today.
National Highways said there is ‘currently no estimate for a re-opening time’ and that the motorway is expected to remain closed until the evening rush hour.
Drivers have been told to avoid the area and diversions are in place through the A34.
The M40 had around 30-minute delays during the morning rush hour, but traffic was coping well at about 3pm, traffic alerts show.
Thames Valley Police said: ‘A full road closure is in place on the M40 in both directions between junction 9 and junction 8a due to a fatal road traffic collision, which occurred at around 10.41pm yesterday (24/3). Two men sadly died at the scene.

‘And two men sustained serious injuries, requiring hospital treatment, where they remain. We would ask the public to please avoid the area and find alternative routes while officers remain at the scene. We will provide further updates when we can.’
Motorists should use the the A34 towards Oxford, then onto the A40 Northern Bypass Road to re-join at J8.
Meanwhile, another crash has closed part of the A34 is closed in both directions between the junctions with the A4183 south of Kennington and the A415.
This is causing delays of about 30 minutes in the area south of Oxford.
