Kathleen Maher, after having her limbs amputated. A woman has told she collapsed at home and woke from a coma to find her legs and arms had been removed. See SWNS story SWTPamputee. Kathleen Maher, 46, was caring for her now late mum when she suddenly passed out and was rushed to A&E by paramedics in February 2018. Medics discovered she had multiple organ failure and sepsis due to a string of infections, and she was put into a month-long induced coma. She woke to find the veins in her arms and legs had collapsed, and she developed necrosis - her arms and legs turned black and died. In a series of ops, surgeons removed both her legs below the knee, and both arms above the elbow. The procedures saved Kathleen?s life - but left her totally limbless, almost mute, incredibly weak and extremely poorly. Brave Kathleen has regained some of her former strength and now relies on prosthetic split hook arms, and stump legs.
