HOUSTON, TEXAS - MARCH 31: (L-R) Astronauts Sunita "Suni" Williams, and Barry "Butch" Wilmore speak during a news conference at the NASA Johnson Space Center on March 31, 2025 in Houston, Texas. Williams and Wilmore answered questions regarding their SpaceX Crew-9 mission and extended time on the International Space Station. The two astronauts were launched to the ISS aboard a Boeing Starliner spacecraft for a scheduled eight-day mission in June 2024. After spacecraft malfunctions the pair were directed to stay, prolonging the mission nine months. They returned to Earth on March 18 aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building at Kennedy Space Center for Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida to board the Boeing CST-100 Starliner spacecraft for the Crew Flight Test launch , on June 5, 2024. Two astronauts stranded in space may sound like the start to a big-screen science thriller, but the Boeing Starliner mission is no work of Hollywood fiction. Astronauts Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Suni" Williams were originally scheduled to spend a little more than a week aboard the International Space Station as part of the debut crew flight test of the Starliner. However, the spacecraft encountered several issues during the flight, and now the two astronauts will likely have to extend their stay aboard the ISS for several months. (Photo by Miguel J. Josh Dury captured the eclipse leading to a total obscuration from Castle Stalker in Argyl, Scotland, 14 March 2025. The UK experienced a lunar eclipse Friday (14 March). The event began in the early morning hours, with the partial phase starting at 5:09am. Most viewers in the UK experienced a partial eclipse as the Moon set below the horizon. However, Josh Dury says he shot captured a total obscuration from Scotland. His pictures were taken between 5:09am and 6:30am at Castle Stalker in Argyll. He says: "Totality refers to the moment when the Moon is totally eclipsed by the Earth shadow. Fortunately clear skies here in Scotland allowed us a window of 15 minutes to observe the event, which was so lucky."

Artist impression of a supernova in space. At least two mass extinction events in Earth's history were likely caused by the "devastating" effects of nearby supernova explosions, a new study suggests. Researchers at Keele University say these super-powerful blasts ? caused by the death of a massive star ? may have previously stripped our planet's atmosphere of its ozone, sparked acid rain and exposed life to harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. They believe a supernova explosion close to Earth could be to blame for both the late Devonian and Ordovician extinction events, which occurred 372 and 445 million years ago respectively.

Supernovas may have caused mass extinctions that killed 85% of life on Earth
